The Isaacs Art Center is a good place to get out of the sun and get a feel for authentic Hawaiiana. The gallery is affiliated with the Hawaii Preparatory Academy, a boarding and day school that was established in Waimea in 1949.
The center, located next to the Academy's village campus, is housed in Waimea's first public school, which was built in 1915. The building has been relocated and restored and appears on the State Register of Historic Places.
The art center contains a large permanent collection of paintings, furniture, rare books, and Hawaiiana. Art pieces are for sale in the gallery. Hawaii Preparatory Academy is an independent, co-educational school for students from kindergarten through grade 12.
The art center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Proceeds from the center help support the school's scholarship fund.
