Pua Mau Place, where flowers bloom in the desert, is a botanical garden and arboretum laid out on the west slope of the Kohala Mountains near Kawaihae. Pua Mau's specialty is perpetually blooming plants.
Here you'll find hundreds of species of native and exotic flowers, trees and shrubs in a 15-acre garden with sweeping views of the ocean. The gardens feature a maze planted with 250 species of hibiscus, an aviary populated by about 150 exotic birds, and a collection or original sculptures.
The non-profit gardens, which are dedicated to the preservation and propagation of plant life indigenous to the Big Island's arid climate, are open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Located in Kawaihae, off Hwy. 270 on Ala Kahua Drive, turn right at the 6 mile marker and proceed 1/2 mile up the hill to a gate in a lava rock wall.
