The barren, moon-like landscape and fiery lava flows of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park have always reached beyond scientific exploration and into the creative psyche of artists, writers, performers and early Hawaiian storytellers. No wonder, then, that an art center has been established in the park.
Volcano Art Center features the works of more than 300 artists and sponsors regular exhibits, demonstrations and special events. The Center is housed in the Volcano House Hotel, built in 1877. Adjacent to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park visitor center, the old hotel is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as Hawaii's oldest visitor accommodation.
The Center offers Elderhostel educational adventures, group programs and wilderness runs, as well as classes and workshops in fine arts and reading, music and dance.
