The Wailoa Center, located in Wailoa State Park fronting Hilo Bay, features multicultural exhibits spotlighting local artists, craftsmen and educators. Its Main Gallery and the Mini Fountain Gallery mount three new exhibits a month.
The Center sits on a site devastated in 1946 and 1960 by giant tsunami waves. It is surrounded by a large, tranquil park with pavilions for parties and gatherings. Charming double- and triple-humped footbridges lead across the lagoon. A statue of Hawaii's legendary king, Kamehameha, is about 100 yards away.
Free and open to the public, the Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from noon to 4:30 p.m.
