One of Hawaii's major draws is its casual atmosphere. It's just hard to think formal in a place where swimsuits, shorts and rubber 'slippers' are daily attire, sand and surf constant companions. Though Waikiki boasts elegant dining, there are scores of casual eateries available, many of them island versions of national chains.
Kua 'Aina Sandwiches, across from Ward Center and on the North Shore in Hale'iwa, is a well-loved local sandwich shop that has become a legend for its smoky, char-broiled burgers. Seaside Bar & Grill, at the corner of Kuhio and Seaside, features a list of dinner specials for under $11 that include New York steak, lobster tail and crab legs. Try Moose McGillycuddy's Pub & Café, on Lewers Street, for decent pub food at affordable prices, or Bubba Gump's, in the Ala Moana Shopping Center, for all things shrimp, crab legs and more.
There are times when the only thing that will make you happy is a big, juicy, bona fide burger. When that urge hits, try Teddy's Bigger Burgers, a '50s-style gourmet burger joint that serves award-winning, hand-pattied, 100 percent ground chuck burgers with great fries and extra thick shakes. Teddy's burgers are available in Hawaii Kai, Kailua and Waikiki.
For a casual, yet classy environment try Brew Moon Restaurant & Microbrewery in the Ward Center. And there's no such thing as a bad night at Duke's Waikiki. Located beachside in the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel, this is a place where something's always happening.
