Craft brew fever is taking over the nation, and while Hawai‘i isn’t necessarily known as a brewery hub, there are some places for beef fans to sip some local flavor.

In Hilo, find Hilo Brewing Co. (275 E. Kawili St., (808) 934-8211), known for Volcano Red Ale and Hawaiian Crow Porter. The tasting room is open Tuesday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Wednesday-Sunday 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Big Island Brewhaus, located in Kamuela (Waimea) is known for award-winning beers: Overboard IPA, Golden Sabbath and Mountain Porter. Stop in for a meal (outdoor seated dining available in the covered beer garden) or grab a growler to go.

Kona Brewing Co.’s Kona Pub and Brewery ( is arguably the granddaddy on the island. Stop in for an order of Uncle’s Fish Tacos and a Longboard Island Lager.

Also in Kona, you’ll find Ola Brew ( The tap room, where you’ll find beer (Ola Brew IPA, Kiawe Brown) and cider (White Pineapple Cider, Dragronfruit Lychee Cider).
