Hike to a Lighthouse

Beyond the CityOahu

MAKAPU‘U LIGHTHOUSE TRAIL is a relatively easy hike with good views of Koko Head Crater, O‘ahu’s Windward coast and the island of Moloka‘i on the far horizon.

Located on O‘ahu’s South Shore between Sandy Beach and Sea Life Park, the main trail leads along an access road to the Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse, one of O‘ahu’s most- familiar landmarks built in 1909. The lighthouse is off limits to vehicular traffic, but hikers are welcome.

To get to Makapu‘u Point, go east past Sandy Beach Park on Kalaniana‘ole Highway until you see a sign on the right. Park for free in the lot at the base of the trail. For more info, go to dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/hiking/oahu/makapuu-point-lighthouse-trail.
